In some circumstances, air quality can be polluted due to a range of reasons such as the expulsion of effluents, noxious air streams and sewerage facilities. It is important that the polluted air from pits and drains is raised well above head height and the fumes are easily exhausted into the external environment.

Care must be taken that any ventilators used in these circumstances are suitable for ventilation pipes (size and robustness) and have the appropriate materials, such as stainless steel ball bearings, to effectively deal with potentially damaging and unhealthy air flows and avoid gaseous build ups.
